Rauw Alejandro

In 2017, Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee released Despacito and it topped the charts for most streamed songs during the course of the space of six months. This mix of reggaeton and pop music not only brought an interest to the genre, but it also brought attention to Latin music generally. Billboard's Top 100 featured two songs that were Spanish predominantly, as well as four tracks in 2016. But during the peak of Despacito's fame in the year 2017 there were 19 predominantly Spanish songs that were included in the top 100. And in 2020 there were 41. Justin Bieber re-mixed Despacito with a Spanish version in 2017 shortly after which the most well-known artists began collaborating with reggaeton artists. Drake teamed with Bad Bunny to produce MIA (2018), while Madonna worked on Medellin with Maluma (2019). In 2020, a few Reggaeton artists were complaining about the direction of their genre to the mainstream. However, a younger generation like Rauw Alejandro was determined to maintain the development. It often blended elements from electronic dance music, as well as different forms.
